Drury Lane Books hosted an author talk with Brian Malloy in downtown Grand Marais on Saturday, June 15, 2024. The talk occurred after an eventful day of Pride festivities in Drury Lane’s cozy space. Cynthia Burton, Drury Lane’s Event Manager, introduced Malloy with a strong list of awards throughout his writing career.

Malloy contextualized his newest novel After Francesco with his experience volunteering for the Minnesota Aids Project in the 1980’s. After an intense and devastating 16 years volunteering throughout the AIDS epidemic, he has taken his experiences into writing with several of his books. After Francesco was released in 2021, 40 years after the first cases of AIDS were diagnosed in the U.S.

Select chapters were read by Malloy from After Francesco and a previous novel, The Year of Ice. Audience members offered praise for his work and asked questions about the story.
