Writing by hand is becoming a lost art. On Wednesday, April 10 at 6 PM, come find it at the Grand Marais Library and keep calligraphy alive for future generations.

Silver Bay Artist Lynn Prouty will be presenting Beautiful Writing with Calligraphy, an experimental learning art experience.

“Lynn is a master calligrapher!” explained Silver Bay Library Director Shannon Walz. “Her work is beautiful and her love and passion for the art exudes from all she does.” Prouty has presented at the Silver Bay Library, her home library, in the past, and Walz describes her style as fun and informative.

During the Beautiful Writing with Calligraphy tour, Prouty will present an introductory talk on the ancient art of calligraphy followed by hands-on activities including writing with a dip pen and ink, a quill pen, and a glass pen. Each attendee will leave with a gift, a personalized bookmark, made by Prouty, with their name in calligraphy.

“Calligraphy can take anything ordinary and elevate it to extraordinary!” exclaimed Prouty. “It is a gift you’re giving someone when you take the time to use calligraphy, for example, in your correspondence. The recipient will often keep the letter or envelope because it looks beautiful, and special. But also because it makes them feel special.”

This free program is geared at those 12 and up and will last one hour.
