On Wednesday, March 13, 2024, local Cook County photographer Bryan Hansel presented photos and stories to an audience at the Grand Marais Public Library.

Hansel went day by day sharing
sights and experiences from his October 2023 ride across the proposed Border-to-Border Touring Route (B2B), which runs across northern Minnesota from the North Dakota and Manitoba border across the state to Silver Bay along Lake Superior. Cook County has opted out of being part of the planning process, citing concerns about environmental degradation and increases in motorized traffic, given that the route would be shared by off-road vehicles (ORVs). He discussed the details around the DNR’s efforts to plan funding for maintenance, as well as opinions from local residents he met along the route, many of them ORV owners out for the fall grouse hunting season. Additionally, he shared bits of culture and attractions he encountered along the way, making recommendations for other cyclists thinking of taking the trek.

Hansel remarks that sales from this fall color photo he took during the bikepacking journey helped pay all trip expenses.

During the presentation, Hansel went into depth on the bikepacking and camera gear he used for his B2B trip. (You can also see him talk about it in this YouTube video.) Visit his website at bryanhansel.com for photos, information on workshops, portrait services, and more.

The Grand Marais Public Library hosts many author talks and events every month. April is National Poetry Month. Stop by for a Poetry Workshop on Wednesday, April 3 from 6:30-7 PM. Free for ages 15 and up with no registration required.
