From the Cook County Early Childhood Education Hub - February 24, 2023
After beginning the Positive Parenting and Caregiver Book Clubs last year, Dads in Cook County began requesting a book club specifically for them. They asked and we listened. The Early Childhood Community Hub, housed through the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic, is launching the “Men of All Ages” Book Club. We hope that all Cook County caregivers who identify as male will feel welcome in this group.
“We invite you to join our discussion in March and April as we learn, share, and reflect together through the Men of All Ages Book Club,” said Jodi Tervo Roberts, Early Childhood Community Hub Facilitator. “We will meet over Zoom two times, for an hour of discussion each meeting. Registered participants receive the book and a discussion outline prior to both meetings, and depending upon the number of participants there may or may not be break-out sessions. We will always re-group as a large group at the end.”
No-Drama Discipline: The Whole-Brain Way to Calm the Chaos and Nurture Your Child's Developing Mind
"No-Drama Discipline provides an effective, compassionate road map for dealing with such tantrums, tensions, and tears - without causing a scene,” said authors Dan Siegal and Tina Payne Bryson. “Based on recent discoveries about the brain that give us deep insights into the children we care for, what they need, and how to discipline them in ways that foster optimal development, this book offers a 'relational' approach that builds on children's innate desire to please their parents and get along well with others.”
Complete with candid stories and playful illustrations that bring the authors' suggestions to life, No-Drama Discipline presents clear messages in a practical and inviting format. Using these techniques, you can discipline children in a way that's high on relationship-building, high on respect, and low on drama and conflict. As a result, your life as a caregiver will be easier, and your caring for children will become more effective. And more importantly, you'll create connections in children's brains to build emotional and social skills that will serve them now and throughout their entire life - all while strengthening your relationship with them.”
This program was made possible through a grant from the North Shore Health Care Foundation and delivered in partnership by the Sawtooth Mountain Clinic and Cook County Higher Education.
There is no cost to join the Book Club, both are free events and the book is also provided in audio, paperback or digital formats. To register go to: CCHE (neoncrm.com)
