As Independence Day approaches, the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest has some reminders for visitors to make sure everyone and everything stays safe.

The Forest Service says when enjoying a campfire, the fire should always be attended and must be completely extinguished before leaving. And to extinguish the flames, use plenty of water to soak the fire, stir the ashes, feel for heat, and repeat the process until the doused fire is cold to the touch. Remember - if it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave.

Fireworks are a traditional part of July 4th festivities, but fireworks are never allowed in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest. The Forest Service says they strive to manage resources to be true to their motto of caring for the land and serving people.

While many of our areas are open and free of charge for your use and enjoyment, some areas and activities do require fees or permits to help maintain, manage, and improve the amenities that you enjoy.
