Memorial Day is the unofficial start to the summer season which means more people will be out on trails with their ATVs.

Officials warn riders to be cautious.

Last year, the Wisconsin DNR reported nearly 50 fatalities from off-highway vehicle accidents across the state, several involving ATVs.

One of the ATV fatalities happened in Bayfield County in October 2021.

For Minnesota, there were over two-dozen fatalities from ATVs last year, one happening in Crow Wing County.

Outdoor enthusiasts like Pete Gassert of Duluth Lawn & Sport remind the public about state laws to follow.

“Anybody under 18 has to wear a helmet whether they’re the driver or a passenger and whether its a traditional ATV or side-by-side unit. They are required to wear a helmet and again anybody under 16 has to have pass ATV safety training,” said Gassert.

DNR says one of the biggest reasons for ATV accidents is speeding and alcohol consumption.

Experts say even if you’re over 18 years of age, you should still wear a helmet, follow the speed limits, and not consume alcohol while driving.
