Schedule of events for Moose Madness Festival

The Moose is Loose in Grand Marais during the annual Moose Madness Family Festival! This year’s event will look a little different, but it is still the ultimate family-focused celebration of all things moose. Enjoy the outdoors and learn a few facts about our celebrated mascot along the way with activities, scavenger hunts, quizzes, dance challenges and more.

Below are some of the activities and events happening at this year’s Moose Madness. Stay tuned for more activities and information!

Moose on a Stoop – Earn Moose Bucks!

The Moose on a Stoop educational scavenger hunt will take families across downtown Grand Marais searching for six signs that include unique moose facts.

  • Just look for the moose with the voice bubbles to learn about our favorite animal and collect the code letter from each sign.
  • Unscramble the code letters to create the code word.
  • Mention it at the Cook County Visitor Information Center (116 West Hwy 61, Grand Marais, MN)
  • RECEIVE FIVE MOOSE BUCKS!

One Moose Buck = $1. Moose bucks will be able to be spent at these Grand Marais businesses:

Murray Says in Harbor Park – Saturday, 1 p.m.

Kids can join the one and only Murray the Moose in Harbor Park on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 1-2 p.m. and play our version of Simon Says with views of Lake Superior and the Grand Marais Lighthouse in the background. Be the last contestant standing and take home the top prize! 

Grand Marais State Bank Moose Medallion Hunt

For the sleuths in the crowd, the Grand Marais State Bank Moose Medallion Hunt is a hoot. The first clues are released Friday morning and go on until the medallion is found. Find the medallion? Bring it to Moose HQ at the Cook County Visitor Information Center to claim your prize — $100 dollars CASH!

Take a Moose-Safari

Exploring the boreal forest by foot and boat is the best way to find moose, but you can also take a drive through prime moose habitat with our moose driving routes. Ranging from 1-2 hours, these driving routes will give you an opportunity to find our favorite animal in the wild. Even if you don’t see a moose, you’ll enjoy scenery that cannot be beat!

Moosey Around Town

See what other moosey-ness is happening around the Grand Marais area:

  • Colvill Moose Crawl, Oct. 22-23 | Colvill area
    Drive the County Road 14/Highway 61 loop through Colvill neighborhoods to see how many moose (cut outs, statues, posters, etc.) you can spot. Make a note of what you spot (color markings AND driveway marker where you spotted it). Bring your list to the Harvest Potluck for Colvill residents & guests Saturday, Oct. 23 at 6 p.m. Bring a dish to pass and your moose spotting list! Download the flyer for full details.
  • Family Weekend & Bark Rubbing Challenge, Oct. 22-24 | North House Folk School
    Each year over MEA weekend the North House Folk School host classes and activities for kids and families. As a part of this weekend event, North House will be offering a moose activity open to everyone that will include a display of a moose antler and information. The challenge will be to do bark rubbings with paper and crayons (organized) on various trees to determine what type of tree might have the best bark to rub off the velvet. Trees will be labeled with names and we’ll also have some stumps with bark to rub on.   • How Do You Measure Up to a Moose? | Caribou Highlands Lodge
    See how you measure up to a full grown Minnesota Moose! Get your photo taken next to our Life-sized Moose Poster and enjoy complimentary “Moose Crunch” popcorn for participating in How do you measure up to a Moose! Stop in anytime at Caribou Highlands lobby on October 23.
  • Moose Coloring Page Contest, Oct. 21-24 | Mike’s Holiday Station Store
    For kids ages 2-10, pick up a moose coloring sheet from Mike’s Holiday Station Store, color it and turn it in by noon on Sunday, Oct. 24, for a change to win a moose-themed prize package valued at $50!
  • Moose Droppings Guessing Game, throughout the weekend | Lake Superior Trading Post
    Can you guess the right number of Moose Droppings in the Jar at the Lake Superior Trading Post? You might win a gift certificate!
  • Moose Madness Bag Toss, Oct. 22-23 | Grand Marais Subway
    Give a bag toss (corn hole) a try at Subway and win a free cookie if you make it in!
  • Moose Trivia on Small Change, Oct. 22, 7 p.m. | WTIP
    Test your moose knowledge and tune in for WTIP‘s Small Change program, a one-hour call-in trivia show. This program will include moose-related questions in celebration of Moose Madness! Stream it here.
  • Muffin Man for Moose Madness, Oct. 23, 11 a.m. | Drury Lane Books
    The Muffin Man is BACK for Moose Madness! Bundle up and join us on the gorgeous beach at Drury Lane Booksfor an hour of stories and fun.
  • Pre-Halloween, Oct. 23, 5-9 p.m. | Caribou Highlands Lodge
    Dress up like a moose, your other favorite forest critter or anything else and join the fun activites & events — including a a photo shoot, costume contest, trick-or-treating and more — all happening at Caribou Highlands Lodge on Saturday, Oct. 23. See Pre-Halloween event details.
  • Sled Dogs Open House and Live Music, Oct. 23, 1-4 p.m. | Points Unknown
    Come and cuddle the sled dogs and enjoy a free tour of the sled dog kennel at Points Unknown! Cook County’s own Jazz guitarist extraordinaire, Briand Morrison will be entertaining you and the sled dogs right in the dog yard; Drive up Highway 61 into Hovland and then head 7 miles up the Arrowhead Trail — you may see a Moose along the way! Follow the Points Unknown signs. Park in the gravel pit and walk or park off to the very edge along Irish Creek Road and walk on up. It’s a 35 minute drive from downtown Grand Marais. (Please leave your own pets at home)
