Cook County is blessed to have many dedicated and passionate non-profit organizations that work hard to enhance the lives of the people who live here.  This month, the Cook County Community Foundation is partnering with Boreal Community Media to salute many of its past grant recipients and how they have put those dollars to work to help make our community a better place to live.  You can make a difference too – make your tax deductible donation to the Cook County Community Foundation by sending your check to Cook County Community Fund, P.O. Box 763, Grand Marais, MN 55604 or by following this link to make an on-line donation:  https://www.dsacommunityfoundation.org/donate?id=1702

Thank you to the Cook County Community Fund for the grant to the Cross River Heritage Center. These funds help achieve our program services expansion project.

The grant will be used to enhance our Explore MN Welcome Center through developing online programming, expanding indoor brochure areas, and creating an outdoor information kiosk for the North Shore community and visitors.

The expansion project aims to enhance the community through the promotion of Cook County businesses and services.

About the Schroeder Area Historical Society

The Heart of Schroeder, as the landmark Cross River Heritage Center is known, was originally built as the Stickney Inn in 1929 as one of the first roadhouses along the new Northshore Highway 1, the first road that connected Duluth, Minnesota, to Fort William-Port Arthur (now Thunder Bay) in Ontario, Canada.

It is the only Tudor architectural-style building in Cook County and through the years has been home to a boarding house, restaurant, meat market, gas station, post office, and the Cross River General Store. Since 2002, it has operated as the Cross River Heritage Center - the museum-home of the Schroeder Area Historical Society!  The Heritage Center will re-open in May 2021.
