WDIO-TV Report: Boreal Emergency Portal among 6 finalists for prestigious Touchstone Award

WDIO-TV reporter Renee Passal and her crew travelled to Grand Marais last month to get the low down on the Boreal Emergency Preparedness Portal. This public service effort by Grand Marais based Boreal Community Media was launched last year and has been nominated as a finalist for the 2019 Touchstone Award by the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation (DSACF). One of the six finalists will be presented the award at the DSACF annual luncheon Monday, October 7 at the DECC in Duluth.
WDIO-TV is the exclusive media partner to the DSACF event and will be airing profiles of each of the six finalist nominee organizations in the month leading up to the awards ceremony.
The Touchstone Award is now in its 25th year and honors non-profit organizations for "their leadership in promoting civic engagement and encouraging inclusiveness." WDIO-TV interviewed Cook County Sheriff Pat Eliasen, Boreal Community Media Executive Director Lisa Bauer and board member Eric Block about the need for and content on the website.
"We are absolutely honored to receive the Touchstone Award nomination.", said Lisa Bauer of Boreal Community Media, "It is so gratifying to receive this recognition of our grass roots efforts to help residents and visitors be better informed and prepared for emergencies that might arise in our backyards."
The Boreal Emergency Preparedness Portal was launched in the spring of 2018 as a project of non-profit Boreal Community Media. The portal is a 24/7 on-line digital resource archiving more than 300 articles on a range of topics to help people be better prepared for emergencies that might arise in the vast wilderness area across Minnesota's Arrowhead region. The website has also profiled many area emergency management personnel including members of the U.S. Coast Guard, Customs and Border Patrol, volunteer fire departments and other first responders, Cook County K-9 deputy Eddy, search and rescue crews, conservation officers and local guides and other experts about safety at home, on the road, on the water and in the wilderness.
The Boreal Emergency Preparedness Portal can be accessed anytime at boreal-emergency.org.
Boreal personnel will be on hand at the awards ceremony in Duluth - watch for additional stories on boreal.org.
