Advanced Metering Infrastructure Pilot Program in Grand Marais

Nov 16, 2018 09:27AM ● By Editor
The Grand Marais Public Utilities Commision is running a pilot program testing the application of Advanced Metering Infrastructure also referred to as “smart meters” to determine if Eaton’s software and service will meet the city’s requirements for optimal data management practices.

The pilot will include approximately 100 Grand Marais Public Utilities electric customers beginning November 2018. Once the city is satisfied with the results of the pilot staff will begin transitioning into the rollout of Advanced Metering Infrastructure across the entire Public Utilities Electric network.

Advanced Metering Infrastructure will provide customers with the data and tools necessary to better manage their energy consumption and costs. Its purpose is to help customers save energy, provide savings in system operation and improve reliability.

Properties in the pilot will have their existing electric meter replaced with an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) meter. The meters will allow the City to read meters remotely and give the City better tools to understand energy usage, costs and provide enhanced customer service.

Installation of the AMI meters may cause a short disruption of service expected to be roughly 15 minutes per site.
