Northern Minnesota is once again skirting a historic weather-related record, and for many, not necessarily a good one.

Yesterday, the National Weather Service in Duluth issued data for current snow depth and snow water equivalent (the amount of water in trapped in the snow). Not surprisingly, Cook County has very little snow depth, and between less than 10% - 20% of snow water equivalent.

According to the National Weather Service, the areas which have less than 10% snow water equivalent are very close to a record set in 1948.

The warm temperatures and lack of snow have caused cancellations of the Beargrease Dog Sled Race and the Gunflint Mail Run, closed local ice rinks, and created other impacts.

Warm temperatures and little to no precipitation are predicted throughout the first week of February.
