Sexual Assault Awareness Month: Film Screening & Discussion

Join the Violence Prevention Center and the Grand Marais Public Library for a film screening and discussion of Women Talking in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

In lieu of a vigil for Sexual Assault Awareness Month, this year we are partnering with the Grand Marais Public Library for a film screening and discussion. Join us at the library on Friday, April 19th at 6pm for this event!

We'll be showing Women Talking, a 2022 film based on true events. The film follows a group women in an isolated religious group as they decide what to do after uncovering a disturbing pattern of sexual assault committed by the men of their community. As the title suggests, much of the film consists of the group of women discussing the abuse, processing their trauma, and deciding how to move forward. Women Talking does not explicitly depict sexual assault onscreen, instead focusing on the impact that assault has on the survivors, and their quest for safety and justice.

VPC staff advocates Lindsey and Jessica will facilitate an optional discussion after the film. Please note, this is a PG13 film. Content warnings for topics discussed or depicted in the film include: sexual assault, child sexual abuse, miscarriage, forced pregnancy, domestic violence, spiritual abuse, and suicide.
