Celebrating Racial Equity and Indigenous Peoples Day Weekend in Grand Portage on October 8, 2022


When: October 8, 2022, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm Where: Grand Portage Community, starting at the Grand Portage National Monument

What: The Grand Portage Community is hosting a series of FREE activities to celebrate the kick-off of “Opening Doors: A Year of Learning”and Indigenous Peoples Day Weekend in Cook County, with the Committee Addressing Racial Equity (CARE).

10:00 am: Start your day off at the Grand Portage National Monument, welcomed by drummers and singers, and pick up a discovery guide at the Heritage Center, and enjoy the activities throughout the day. The discovery guide will lead visitors through the Grand Portage Community, starting at the Grand Portage National Monument. Listen to the drummers and singers, and learn about the community, it’s history, and people.

Visit the Historic Stone Bridge, 10:30 am-11:30 am learn about Lacrosse and participate in a “Gift Game,” hike part of the Grand Portage Trail (Gichi Onigaming - The Great Carrying Place), and explore Grand Portage State Park (to name but a few activities for the day)! During this time, the Grand Portage Museum and Veterans Memorial (which has been closed for quite a while) will be open to the public, and is an especially great option in case of rain.

Community volunteers are eager to meet you and your family. 12:00 pm—3:00 pm: come enjoy fry bread tacos at the Grand Portage Community Center. Tacos are free and available to everyone.

Our entire community is welcome! This is a fantastic opportunity for the whole family to explore Grand Portage, and have a blast while making new friends. Information on the Committee Addressing Racial Equity’s “Opening Doors: A Year of Learning” will be available.

All activities are free of charge. People from all parts of Cook County and Grand Portage are welcome and encouraged to attend.
