This lecture will provide an introductory framework to “reading” the news and other media with a critical lens. Media actors have various roles: as watchdogs for democracy, as knowledge producers, and as professionals with loosely defined norms and practices for conducting their work. However, each of these roles, practices, and norms are not stagnant, but are sites of contention within the current political and technological landscape. By illuminating the underlying social constructions behind news production, this talk will inform participants how to view the media not only as a text, but as a socially-embedded cultural product.
Presenter Christine Delp is a PhD student in Sociology at the University of Minnesota and an award-winning documentary filmmaker. Her research interests include sociology of the media, culture, knowledge, and the arts. Her current research explores the competing epistemologies and moral frameworks underlying controversial documentary films.
