Our community is strongest when the people impacted by decisions provide feedback throughout the process.  Cook County Public Health, with support from Sawtooth Mountain Clinic, is seeking community input on a public health vending machine that could expand access to health supporting and lifesaving supplies in Grand Marais.

A public health vending machine is a simple, easy‑to‑use machine that provides free health supplies. It works just like a snack vending machine, except instead of chips or soda, it offers items that help people stay safe and healthy. These machines reduce barriers such as transportation, cost, stigma, and limited clinic hours, making it easier for community members to access lifesaving resources.  They are available for anyone who needs the items, no questions asked.

The public health vending machine was purchased by the University of Minnesota using funds from the Rural Communities Opioid Response Program Grant. This grant supported collaborative work focused on  substance misuse prevention, treatment, and recovery with a wide range of local and regional partners.

Cook County Public Health currently offers some risk reduction supplies funded through  National Opioid Settlement funds. Ongoing funding for the machine will come from grants, partner agencies, and opioid settlement funds.

We want to hear from you:
  • What items should be included?
  • Where would a vending machine be most accessible?
  • How can this best support the health of our community?
