From the Cook County Coalition of Lake Associations - June 25, 2026
With the lifting of federal protections banning copper-nickel sulfide mining in the Lake Superior and Rainy River watersheds, many residents and visitors to Cook County have concerns and questions about how this industry could affect waters, wildlife, human health, and local businesses.
The Cook County Coalition of Lake Associations (CCCoLA) Board members have been studying this issue for the past several months and, in partnership with Cook County Higher Education, will be sponsoring a community workshop to provide a deeper understanding of copper-nickel mining and what it may mean for our region.
Participants will learn about the mining process, gain a clearer understanding of potential impacts on the waters and shorelands within the Rainy River and Lake Superior watersheds, and explore how these considerations could impact local businesses.
The workshop will offer an opportunity to learn, ask questions, and engage in thoughtful conversation. Three speakers providing 15-minute presentations each, will provide information key to understanding copper-nickel mining and its impacts. There will be a breakout session after each speaker for small group discussions. The workshop will wrap-up with a general discussion on common themes and unique perspectives.
Everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend, as space allows. The workshop is free, but registration is required. Please register ahead of time using this link:
