North Shore Music Association (NSMA) is thrilled to present Lone Piñon in concert on Friday, April 17 at 7:00 PM at Up Yonder in Grand Marais. vvv
Featuring fiddles, accordion, upright bass, guitars, vihuela, and bilingual vocals, Lone Piñon draws from Spanish, Mexican, Indigenous, Anglo-American, and Afro-American musical traditions. Their repertoire includes traditional polkas, valses, rancheras, sones, and other regional styles learned from elder musicians and preserved through deep community relationships and historical field recordings.
Born from centuries of cultural exchange, Lone Piñon’s music reminds us that shared heritage is kept alive through gathering, listening, and celebration. Their performances are joyful, danceable, and deeply rooted—bridging generations and inviting the whole room into the tradition.
In addition to their evening performance, Lone Piñon will spend time during the day working with middle and high school music students at Cook County Schools. Students will have the rare opportunity to engage directly with master culture-bearers—learning about the history and cultural roots of the music, hearing the stories behind the songs, and experiencing firsthand how musical traditions are passed down, adapted, and kept vibrant across generations. For young musicians in our rural community, this kind of access to nationally recognized artists is both inspiring and transformative, deepening their understanding of American musical heritage while expanding their sense of what is possible in their own creative lives.
“This concert is an opportunity to come together as a community and celebrate the beauty that emerges at cultural crossroads,” says Barbara Jean Meyers, executive director of NSMA. “Lone Piñon’s music reminds us that our differences don’t divide us—they enrich the stories we tell and the songs we carry forward.”
The concert will take place at Up Yonder in Grand Marais on Friday, April 17 at 7:00 PM. Tickets are sliding scale, and the concert is free for K–12 students.
Tickets are available at northshoremusicassociation.com or nsma.simpletix.com.
