North Shore Music Association (NSMA) invites audiences to experience something truly rare on Saturday, April 11 at 7:00 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais: the Valencia Baryton Project, an internationally touring classical trio devoted to reviving one of music history’s most fascinating and seldom-heard instruments—the baryton.
With 16 strings—six bowed on the front and ten plucked on the back like a harp—the baryton is an extraordinary instrument once championed by Joseph Haydn, who composed nearly 170 works for it. Today, only a handful of musicians in the world play the baryton, and the Valencia Baryton Project has become one of its leading ambassadors, bringing these luminous, rarely heard masterpieces back to life for modern audiences.
Founded in Valencia, Spain, the trio has performed more than 50 concerts across the U.S. and Canada in recent years, along with additional touring throughout Europe and Latin America. Their programming pairs elegant, seldom-heard works by Haydn with newly commissioned pieces written especially for the ensemble—bridging classical tradition with fresh contemporary voices and offering listeners both historical depth and living creativity.
Set in the warm, resonant acoustics of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, this concert promises an intimate and immersive listening experience—an opportunity to hear a nearly forgotten instrument sing again in all its richness and nuance.
The concert will take place on Saturday, April 11 at 7:00 PM at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Grand Marais. Tickets are sliding scale, and the concert is free for K–12 students.
Tickets are available at northshoremusicassociation.com or nsma.simpletix.com.
