The week ended with light freezing rain and fog. The water droplets in the fog started to freeze to the branches producing Rime Ice or Rime Frost. The next morning it was absolutely beautiful. Rime frost is white, icy deposits formed when supercooled water droplets in fog freeze upon contact with cold surfaces like the tree branches.
I drove up into the Superior National Forest where the rime frost was thicker. Rime frost appears as jagged or spike-like crystals that builds upon the branches. Everything was covered with frost. Each direction was another postcard like view. I was hoping for a blue sky but the fog hung on all morning. The entire forest took on an enchanted view.
