Our daughter Rebecca was up this week. Before the big storm we headed up to Grand Portage to see some of the ice shards and waterfalls. Hundreds of ice shards were piled up along the Grand Portage shoreline. The most beautiful spot we stopped at was Hollow Rock. It is a small little island a few feet off shore with an open arch in the middle.

At sunrise there was just enough clouds overhead to make for an inspiring view. Unlike the Sea Caves across the lake in Wisconsin that drew thousands of visitors that same day, we were the only ones admiring the peaceful views of Hollow Rock. I moved over to catch the sun coming through the ice-covered arch. Several minutes were spent admiring the ephemeral colors as the sun moved across the icicles.

We were glad we made it when we did as the fifty mile per hour gusts from Wednesday’s storm has not only changed the ice on the North Shore but also took out the ice access to the Sea Caves in Wisconsin.
