University of Minnesota Extension Cook County has scheduled two educational workshops in Grand Marais this March, focusing on seasonal land stewardship and food production. According to Cook County Extension, these programs are designed to provide local residents with practical skills for managing fruit trees and harvesting maple sap.
Apple Pruning Workshop
The first session, scheduled for Friday, March 13, from 1–3 p.m., will focus on apple tree maintenance. According to Cook County Extension, pruning during the winter dormancy period is a recommended practice to improve fruit quality, maintain tree size, and remove diseased limbs. Local Extension Educator Sarah Waddle and Extension Fruit Educator Madeline Wimmer will lead an indoor session at the Cook County Community Center, followed by a hands-on practice session at the Cook County Community Orchard. Attendees are advised to dress for outdoor conditions and bring their own pruning tools, such as loppers or hand saws, if available. Registration is required and follows a sliding scale fee of $0–$20.
Maple Sugaring for Beginners
On Thursday, March 26, from 1–4 p.m., Extension will host a workshop dedicated to the process of maple syrup production. According to Cook County Extension, the curriculum covers the regional history of maple sugaring, techniques for harvesting sap and boiling it into syrup, and best practices for maintaining tree health during the harvest. While designed for beginners, the session is open to sugarmakers of all experience levels. The program begins with a presentation at the Cook County Community Center before participants travel to a local homestead-scale sugarbush to learn from experienced local sugarmakers. This workshop is free, though advance registration is required. In the event of inclement weather, registered participants will be notified of any changes on the morning of the event.
