CedarSun Electric LLC began the way many small businesses in Cook County do — with a skill set, a commitment to the community, and a willingness to take the calls when they come in.
Wendi and Steve run the electrical and solar company together, serving all of Cook County and Grand Portage. The company specializes in electrical service and solar systems, including off-grid and battery setups. They work with full-time residents, seasonal property owners, and local businesses. Their focus is straightforward: honest work, transparent pricing, and clear communication. In a rural region where distance, weather, and limited cell service are part of every job, that consistency matters.
Who is CedarSun Electric?
Steve is a licensed Master Electrician who began his apprenticeship in 2017. Over the years, he’s worked in residential, commercial, and light industrial settings, including time as a foreman on large-scale projects. While he originally started in solar, much of his experience has been in electrical service work — the kind that requires patience and problem-solving.

Jake, an electrical apprentice, works alongside him on every job. Though still completing his apprenticeship, he brings ten years of hands-on solar experience, especially with off-grid and battery systems. In Cook County, where many homes sit off the main lines or rely on hybrid systems, that background is especially valuable. Together, he and Steve combine electrical depth with specialized solar knowledge.
Wendi manages the day-to-day communication and logistics — calls, emails, scheduling, and invoicing. She keeps projects moving and customers informed, which can take extra effort in an area known for patchy cell reception. Clear timelines and realistic expectations are a priority.
All three describe CedarSun as a long-term commitment. Cook County is home, and they intend to keep building the business here.
As more properties connect to grid power, solar questions are increasingly common. Many homeowners want to know whether to keep an older off-grid system or integrate solar with a new service. Wendi says every property requires an honest, case-by-case review, and CedarSun will walk through the details carefully so customers can make informed decisions.
Emergency calls are also part of their work. After storms or equipment failures — especially in winter — power problems can’t always wait. The team says they have responded after hours and driven to remote properties when heat or critical systems were at risk. In some cases, they’ve even loaned temporary equipment while repairs were underway.
DarkSky International Training
Environmental responsibility is another piece of their approach, and for them, it extends beyond solar panels. They are in the process of pursuing training connected to DarkSky International, with the goal of helping promote dark-sky-friendly outdoor lighting in the region.
For Wendi and Steve, this is personal. One of the reasons they live here is the night sky — the Milky Way stretching clearly overhead, the absence of urban glow, the quiet darkness that defines much of Cook County. They also point to migrating birds, which rely on natural darkness during seasonal travel.
They hope to educate clients about simple lighting choices that can make a difference: shielded fixtures that direct light downward instead of outward, warmer color temperatures, motion sensors instead of constant floodlights, and avoiding unnecessary illumination on properties that sit vacant much of the year. Often, they say, it’s not about removing light entirely — it’s about using it thoughtfully.
“Sometimes people don’t realize that even one light can add up,” Wendi explained. “But if every property has one light shining into the sky all night, it changes the landscape.”
For Wendi, Steve, and Jake, the business is about steady service and long-term presence — taking care of the systems that keep homes running, while also paying attention to the qualities that make this corner of Minnesota worth calling home.
