Students at Sawtooth Mountain Elementary School are preparing to take the stage alongside professional opera singers on February 10, 2026. The school will host a production of Gaetano Donizetti’s "Elixir of Love," presented by Little Opera of the North (Little LOON), which is a touring program of Lyric Opera of the North (LOON).
While the production features a traveling cast of professional performers, it relies heavily on local student participation. Cindy Johnson, a music teacher at Sawtooth Elementary School, told Boreal Community Media that third-grade students will appear onstage in both chorus and cameo roles. According to information from the LOON website, music teachers at participating schools typically select a 16-member student chorus and assist them in preparing their music to perform alongside the professional cast.
The version of "Elixir of Love" being presented is an adaptation by Opera for the Young, a Madison-based organization that specializes in modifying classic scores for elementary audiences. These productions are fully staged and performed in English. According to the Lyric Opera of the North, the program aims to introduce students to the "original scores of master composers" by placing the stories in contexts relevant to 21st-century life. Each year, the Little LOON program reaches approximately 10,000 children across Northern Minnesota, delivering 30-40 performances per season.
This is not the first time the organization has performed at Sawtooth Elementary. Johnson shared that some may remember most recently when Little LOON visited the school during the 2024-2025 academic year to present "Rusalka: A Mermaid’s Tale."
The professional cast for these productions typically includes four singers and one pianist, many of whom hold advanced degrees in music and are active performing artists.
According to Johnson, the school has extended an invitation to the friends and family of Sawtooth Mountain Elementary students. The event will take place in the school gymnasium with doors opening at 9:15 a.m. and the performance beginning at 9:20 a.m. The production, which includes a brief question-and-answer session, is expected to conclude around 10:10 a.m.
This specific event is made possible through a grant provided by the Cook County School District 166 Education Foundation.
