A Firefighter I & Firefighter II (NFPA 1001) certification course will be offered in Hovland, running from January 12 through May 2. This comprehensive training program is designed for individuals interested in becoming certified firefighters to support their local community and neighbors.

Lectures will be held on Monday and Tuesday evenings, with select Saturdays reserved for hands-on skills training days. The course curriculum includes preparation for and completion of the following exams:

  • Firefighter I

  • Firefighter II

  • Hazardous Materials (HazMat)

  • Practical skills examination

  • Live burn simulation examination

The course will be instructed by Terry Spieker, Fire Chief of the Hovland Volunteer Fire Department, bringing real-world experience and leadership to the training.

All fire departments in Cook County are staffed by volunteer firefighters. Maintaining strong, well-trained volunteer fire departments is essential to ensuring timely emergency response, public safety, and community resilience throughout the county. This training opportunity helps support that mission by preparing the next generation of volunteer firefighters.

This certification training is open to anyone in Cook County and is a great opportunity for those looking to serve their community or pursue a meaningful volunteer role.

Please note, this course will more than likely be the last offering in Cook County for the foreseeable future, as Terry is planning to retire from instructing. Having taken this course myself last year, I highly recommend it. This course is an excellent way to gain the necessary knowledge to keep your neighbors and community safe.
