Cook County Seeking Applicants for Two Vacancies on the Planning Commission

From Cook County - January 7, 2026

Cook County is currently accepting applications to fill two vacancies on the Cook County Planning Commission. The Planning Commission plays a critical role in advising the Cook County Board of Commissioners on land use matters that affect the county’s communities, natural resources, and long-term development.

The Cook County Land Use Guide Plan begins by recognizing that all aspects of local land use planning are rooted in the core reasons residents choose to live in Cook County. From this shared choice flows an understanding of the county’s unique character, residents’ hopes for the future, and the policies and actions intended to protect and guide that future. As stated in the Land Use Guide Plan: “We live in Cook County because this unique place and community is where we choose to thrive amid an unparalleled natural environment for which we are dedicated stewards.”

The Planning Commission helps carry this vision forward by ensuring that land use decisions are thoughtful, consistent, and grounded in adopted plans and ordinances.

The Planning Commission reviews land use applications, proposed ordinance amendments, and comprehensive planning matters, and makes fact-based recommendations to the Cook County Board of Commissioners using adopted policies, ordinances, and applicable state and local regulations.

Cook County encourages applications from individuals who demonstrate:

  • Ability to collaborate and communicate clearly
  • Interest in land use planning, community development, environmental stewardship, or local government (experience helpful but not required)
