Those of us in Cook County and Grand Portage have an opportunity to see the northern lights tonight due to an incoming geomagnetic storm. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center has issued a G4 (Severe) watch. This level of activity typically results in bright displays that reach much further south than average, with the most intense activity forecast to peak late tonight, January 19, into the early morning of January 20. Fingers crossed for clear skies.
There is some variation in the forecasts, however. While NOAA is forecasting a severe storm (typically resulting in a KP of 7 or 8), the University of Alaska Fairbanks Geophysical Institute is currently predicting a KP index of 4. For Cook County, a KP of 4 or 5 is usually the minimum needed for a solid viewing.
The moon is currently in a "new moon" phase, which is a major bonus for aurora viewing, as the lack of moonlight will keep the skies dark.
Predicting timing can be difficult. One option is to download the "My Aurora Forecast and Alerts" app, available for Apple and Android. It is a free resource that alerts you as to when the Auroras might be visible in your area. Another useful resource is the Facebook Group Upper Midwest Aurora Chasers.
Of course, there is always some uncertainty. Your best bet is to find a location with minimal light pollution and keep your eyes on the sky.
Happy aurora hunting!
