Superior Cycling Association celebrates first official season of the pump track and skills park with community event

In June of this year, the Superior Cycling Association (SCA) officially debuted a new pump bike track and skills park at the Cook County Community Center, a project that was the result of years of planning and work. The new park, which opened late spring/early summer, is designed to be a safe, accessible, and fun resource for cyclists of all ages and skill levels.
Currently, the pump track and skills park is located in the outdoor hockey rink at the community center. Jay DeCoux, chair of the SCA Board, told Boreal Community Media earlier this year that the county and SCA have a joint commitment to own and maintain the equipment in a "public space for at least the next 20 years," adding that the SCA and the county will be looking at options for a more permanent home for the track. Until a permanent location is found, the SCA will be responsible for the installation of the park and takedown of the equipment each fall and spring.
DeCoux also shared the journey of the project, stating that the idea was born out of a need to address a gap in the local cycling scene. "Our geography up here makes beginner trails and other resources very tricky," DeCoux said. "Even our most accessible trails at Pincushion and Britton Peak would be considered 'intermediate' at most other ride centers."
Beginning in 2018, the SCA started designing a skills park that could cater to beginners while still offering a challenge for more experienced riders. According to DeCoux, "SCA began putting together designs for the park and had many attempts at finding a home and funding for it. Due to the work of Paul Nordlund, Tim Kennedy, and the SCA Board, SCA was able to secure the partnership with the county and funding through the Greater MN Parks and Trails Commission to fund the project."
To celebrate the first season of the pump track and skills park, the SCA is hosting a community celebration on Saturday, October 25, at 2:30 p.m.
The event will take place after a social group ride at Pincushion Mountain at 1 p.m., and before the SCA annual meeting, which will begin at 3 p.m.
