How did you land in Cook County?  What journey led you here?

I moved here in 2007 when my family bought Bearskin Lodge.  My future wife came to work for us in the summer 2008, and then came back for good in 2009 after finishing school.

What is it like raising your family on a resort on the Gunflint Trail?

Sometimes it would be nice to be closer to town and school, but I like to think our kids have a pretty great life.  So much of Bearskin is built around families enjoying themselves, and our kids get to take advantage of all of that as well.  Swimming at the beach, doing our naturalist activities, skiing and hot tubbing, there's a lot of stuff for kids to do.

Away from the resort, having kids has really made me appreciate the great community on the Gunflint and in Grand Marais.  Our daughter has been in school for two years, and it seems like everyone at school and in town already knows her name and is happy to see her.

Tell us about how you keep going during busy seasons.  What keeps you motivated during the long days?

We have a really good staff, which makes my days less long and hard then you might think.  There's also a lot to do at a resort that is engaging and fun, or at least it is the first thousand times.

You will be taking over Bearskin Lodge.  Do you have any big plans or changes in mind?

I wouldn't say that there are any big changes on the horizon.  Every year we add or improve some small things, but I don't know that I see any drastic changes in the future.

What is the best advice you were ever given and how did it impact your life?

Nothing comes to mind at the moment.  I've probably been given lots of really good advice in my life, I just haven't followed much of it.

What is your favorite season on the Gunflint Trail and why?

It's hard to say.  I might have previously said winter, just for the nordic skiing, but with kids can just be such a hassle to get everyone bundled up and out the door in the cold that it makes you appreciate the ease of summer temps.  Probably late summer/early fall, when the bugs are mostly gone and the lakes still warm enough for swimming.

Lastly, are there any favorite spots in the County that you enjoy going to on a day off to unwind and relax?

Out on the ski trails around Bearskin, skiing, riding my bike or hiking.
