Updated: 2024 Minnesota State Primary, Cook County School Board, Grand Marais City Council, and North Shore Health Hospital Board Election Results

On August 13, people across Minnesota headed to the polls for the 2024 MN State Primary Elections. Locally, some residents of Cook County had the opportunity to consider filing for several different positions for the Cook County ISD 166 School Board, North Shore Health Hospital Board, and Grand Marais City Council, including for Mayor. The filing period for those positions opened Tuesday, July 30, and closed on August 13 at 5 pm. 

Here are the poll results, and who will appear on the ballot on November 5:
 
US Senator: 
  • Royce White (R) - 38.54% of votes
  • Amy Klobuchar (D) - 94.24% of votes

U.S. Representative District 8    

  • Pete Stauber (R) - 90.49% of votes
  • Jen Schultz (D) - 90.96% of votes

In Cook County, there are 
3,985 registered voters, including 14 who did so in person yesterday. 
1,376 voted in person or via absentee ballot for the August 13 Primary. 


Here are the filing results for North Shore Health Hospital Board, ISD 166 Cook County School District, and Grand Marais City Council:

North Shore Health Hospital Board
A seat in District 2, currently held by Mary Sanders, and District 4, currently held by Kay Olson are up for election. 

District 2 Candidates:
  • Doulgas O. Sanders, Jr. 
  • Milan Schmidt
District 4 Candidates: 
  • Kathryn Olson
  • Sam Usem

Cook County ISD District 166 School Board
A seat in District 2, currently held by Carrie Jansen, and District 4, currently held by Stephanie Radloff, are up for election. 

District 2 Candidate: 
  • Carrie Jansen
District 4 Candidate: 
  • None. (Editor's note: After the filing period closed, a candidate did launch a write-in campaign for District 4. Learn more here.)


Grand Marais City Council

August 15, 2024 Update: 

Candidate for Mayor:
  • Tracy Benson
Council Member Candidates:
  • Michael Garry
  • Craig Schulte
Council Member Special Election Candidate:
  • William Lovaas


As of 10:00 am on August 14, the Minnesota Secretary of State Candidate Result Page shows no filings for any of the City Council positions. Boreal Community Media is verifying these results and will update this post as more information comes in. 

Currently, the following are open for election:
  • One Mayor, incumbent Tracy Benson - Two-Year-Term
  • One City Councilor, incumbent Craig Schulte - Four-Year-Term
  • One City Councilor, incumbent Michael Garry - Four-Year-Term
  • One City Councilor, incumbent William Lovaas - Two-Year-Term
