The Harvest Moon, which marks the end of summer and the beginning of fall, achieves peak brightness this weekend on Friday, September 29. The Harvest Moon is also known as the Leaves Changing Color Moon and Falling Leaves Moon by the Ojibwe. The Dakota uses the names Moon When the Rice is Laid Up to Dry and Corn Harvest Moon. The extraordinary red tint of the moon this time of year is caused by the close timing of the moon's rise with the sunset.
