On the last Saturday of April, hundreds of bookstores around the nation celebrate Independent Bookstore Day. This year, the movement is celebrating its 10th anniversary.

Local Cook County bookstore Drury Lane Books is one of those stores throwing a party to celebrate all things books and the people that read them.

Gwen Danfelt, Manager of Drury Lane Books told Boreal Community Media that:

"Independent Bookstore Day is celebrated by hundreds of bookstores around the country every year on the last Saturday in April. Why? Because bookstores, like libraries or craft stores or cafes with live music, are public spaces built around a shared purpose. Our purpose is access to good books. If reading is a hobby for you, we're part of that hobby that you can share with others, and it is worth celebrating! "

But it isn't just the bookstore that Drury Lane is celebrating on the 29th.

Danfelt shared that the celebration will also focus on the Cook County community and those beyond.

"
We didn't do any events for 3 years during the pandemic, but during those years we saw increased readership and support from the Cook County community and beyond. We're just happy to be your local bookstore, thank you for reading," she said.

You can join in the festivities at Drury Lane on Saturday, April 29 from 10am - 5pm. Just some of the perks include cookies, free bookmarks and stickers, book giveaways, and a meet & greet opportunity with author
Lorna Landvik from 1:00pm - 2:30pm.
