A Boreal Community Media exclusive - February 19, 2023

How did you "land" in Cook County?
I landed in Cook County after following a life long dream to work at Bearskin lodge. My family started going to this lodge in 1972 and I continued to visit every year until I eventually moved here in 2017 after being offered a position at Bearskin!

Not only do you own and operate a restaurant, but you also take amazing wildlife photos.  Tell us a bit about how you got started in photography.
I remember the exact day I pulled out my camera and ventured out to find a moose. It was Spring and the “shoulder season” for Bearskin. I was the only employee and had decided I wanted to start a hobby. So I set out one evening to look for anything to photograph & I stumbled upon 2 moose. I was instantly hooked.

What brings you the most joy about owning a business in a busy tourist community?
Tourists bring me the most joy! I love meeting people and especially people that have never been to Grand Marais before. It brings me joy to hear people talk about how they love our community!

Who inspires you the most in your life and why?
My grandpa is my biggest inspiration. He owned and operated Narverud Cleaners, a family owned business that lasted 80 years. He loved the Gunflint Trail and was really passionate about teaching me to love it as well.

What is the best business advice you were ever given?
No risk, no reward. It is scary owning your own business at 27 but I am forever grateful I took this leap.

Lastly, when you have a night off and want to go out for dinner, what is your favorite "go to" spot?
The Gunflint Tavern. Big Bowl and Pot Stickers, yes please!
