The say goes that "not all heroes wear capes". And in the case of the unsung heroes who keep us safe during harsh winter storms, that statement could not be more true.

Like many in the community, we at Boreal Community Media wanted to show our appreciation for all that those unsung heroes do for us, not only during winter storms, but year round. These people include, but are not limited to:

  • Linemen
  • Plow drivers
  • EMTs

  • Fire department
  • Cook County Sheriff staff

  • Cook County IT Dept

  • Cook County Maintenance Staff

  • Cook County Public Health and Human Services staff who helped arrange warming spaces for those without power

  • Tow truck drivers
  • Medical workers

  • Behind the scenes spouses and families

Over the past few days, we asked you to send in your message of thanks, and you delivered! We have compiled them below, and will send them to the above organizations.

Thank you to all the unsung heroes; the Cook County community (and beyond) appreciate you more than you know!

Thank you all that helped. The gift of a wonderful Christmas with family in light and warmth was so great. And you gave us that gift under the most horrible of weather conditions. Thank you.

Can't forget about the Cook County IT Dept, or the County Maintenance dept who worked tirelessly Friday night and Saturday to make sure everything was up and running during the storm.

There are so many to thank. But I will pick just a couple for now. I hardly had enough "gumption" to let my dog out to do its business.

So when I think of the linemen out there in the dark, wind howling, extremely cold temps risking their lives to keep my lights on, I am in awe of their service. THANK YOU.

I am also thankful for Matthew Brown and the crew at WTIP that kept broadcasting weather-related updates to all of us during the storm.

Medical workers: You are always there for us, taken for granted even if we end up using your services.   Thank you for what you do!!

Linemen: Lights blinking off during a storm makes you wonder how long you might be without power.   You guys do a fantastic job of getting out and attacking the problem quickly.  Thank You!!

We want to thank the plow drivers for doing such a great job with all the snow we have had.  You’re terrific!

Dear linemen, snow plow drivers and all others who kept us safe and dry during the last storm and all storms we experience here in the Arrowhead.

We had 3 power outages at our house for about 45 minutes each and we are very grateful for the exemplary service and keeping our roads open during that extreme weather event.

You all were in our prayers and we thank you so much for you dedication and expertise.

Kudos and many thanks,
Craig and Dianne Peterson

Words can’t fully express the magnitude of gratitude we all feel toward all of you who help get and keep us safe many times all year long. This recent 5 days of winter blizzard was a test for all of us, and you all passed with flying colors. Your bravery and patience was amazing. Very grateful!

With much gratitude and appreciation for the work of ALL the workers who cared for our county and it's community over the last holiday and storm as well as the last few years when conditions have been out of the ordinary. You have been there when you're needed the most and stepped up to provide the care that's needed. We could not live here without your gracious presence.

A huge thank you to all the people who were out in the cold and dark last weekend to keep our lights on. Every time the power came back on during the horrible wind, I thought to myself “someone went up on a ladder to make the lights come back on”. Our community relies on your incredibly essential service and we are all grateful.

Thank you to all the plow operators who made getting around possible. What would we do without you?

Thank you to all the healthcare workers who braved the weather to make it to work to care for us and respond to emergencies.

Thank you to the grocers who kept the stores open.

Thank you to my neighbor Dennis who plows my driveway.
Patrick Karr, Grand Marais

A very heartfelt thank you to everyone involved in caring for our community in the recent storm, from WTIP and other media keeping all informed to the workers out in the midst of it.  As a Director at  Arrowhead Cooperative, I would like to send special kudos to our linemen and support staff.  So proud of our community!
