Balsam fir are susceptible to insect and disease infestations, which causes the trees to die and become flammable fuel to spread and carry wildfire. It is important to carefully read the overview and need-to-know information prior to purchasing the permit. In addition to Christmas trees, bough permits are also available for gathering balsam boughs from National Forest System lands. Visiting your national forest to cut either forest boughs or a balsam Christmas tree(s) with your family and friends can add a special touch and outdoor outing for holiday decorating. Removing these trees in designated areas helps other trees grow larger, reduce fire risk, and can open areas that provide forage for wildlife. Fourth graders with an “Every Kid Outdoors” pass are eligible for a free Christmas tree permit and can apply by entering the pass or voucher number when purchasing a permit.
