With the holiday season coming up, the Superior National Forest reminds communities that Christmas tree permits are available to purchase online through Recreation.gov until January 6, 2023.

Details about designated cutting areas, dates, and types of trees that may be cut are located at Superior National Forest Website.

"When the public partakes in the Christmas tree permit program through selective removal of balsam fir, it helps forest health by reducing thick areas of the tree species. Balsam fir are susceptible to insect and disease infestations, which causes the trees to die and become flammable fuel to spread and carry wildfire. In addition, going into the forest and cutting a tree is a nice way to enjoy the National Forest System lands around you." –Nicholas Petrack, Superior National Forest Fire Management Officer.

To purchase a Christmas tree permit, visit Recreation.gov/tree-permits, and search for Superior National Forest Christmas Tree Permits. It is important to carefully read the overview and need-to-know information prior to purchasing the permit. Visitors will also need to set up or login to a Recreation.gov account to complete the transaction.

"It was such a great experience walking out into the forest and searching for the perfect Christmas tree. Both my friend and I found trees and helped each other saw, trim and stow them in her truck. Mother Nature even made it a memorable time by sending a gentle snowfall while we were out there in the forest. I think this has just become my new tree cutting tradition."–Paula A. in a review on Recreation.gov tree permit site.

In addition to Christmas trees, bough permits are also available for gathering balsam boughs from National Forest System lands. All bough parties must have a permit for cutting boughs for personal use. For more information on cost and permit specifications for boughs, see Holiday Greenery Info Sheet.

Visiting your national forest to cut either forest boughs or a balsam Christmas tree(s) with your family and friends can add a special touch and outdoor outing for holiday decorating. Removing these trees in designated areas helps other trees grow larger, reduce fire risk, and can open areas that provide forage for wildlife. Fourth graders with an “Every Kid Outdoors” pass are eligible for a free Christmas tree permit and can apply by entering the pass or voucher number when purchasing a permit.
