Sunday, June 19, also known as Juneteenth commemorates the ending of slavery in the United States.

There are events happening across the country and right here in the Northland all weekend to celebrate.

The Twin Ports Celebrate Freedom event is happening Saturday, June 18.

It is a free family event at Barker’s Island in Superior.

ChaQuana McEntyre, founder and executive director of Family Rise Together, and Jacob Bell, executive director of Family Freedom Center in Duluth, are teaming up to put on the event.

“This is actually our second year of doing the Twin Ports Juneteenth, however, we have been hosting Juneteenth since 2016 in Superior, and Duluth has been hosting it for about 20 years,” McEntyre said.

From 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., there will be free food, live music, games, bouncy houses, booths, and artists.

Transportation is available for people who need it.

Bell said it is a way for the community to come together.

“We’ve been doing Juneteenth as the community at large in the United States since 1865, so this is a regular thing for us to get together, and it’s a great thing that it’s now recognized as a federal holiday,” Bell said.

“We’re inviting the entire community out for great food, great music, and great times,” Bell said.
