Police in Red Wing are warning residents of scammers who are impersonating detectives and demanding money.

Red Wing Police said it has received several reports from citizens who reportedly received a phone call indicating they have to send money or risk being arrested.

The scam caller impersonates a Red Wing investigator, tells the victim they've failed to appear in court, committed a crime or have an outstanding warrant and need to send money immediately to resolve the issue. The caller usually tells the victim to send money through the digital app Venmo.

Police warn that digital money transfers are immediate and can't be canceled.

Additionally, police won't ever call citizens demanding immediate payment for any reason. The department warns residents to not send money to someone without confirming that person's identity.

Anyone who receives a similar scam call is asked to report it to police at 651-358-3155.
