"When any domestic violence case is so public, it's devastating to our entire nationwide community of advocates. We know how someone's death can impact their family, generationally," shared Brittany Robb, executive director of Safe Haven Shelter and Resource Center.

Duluth just recognized the 6th anniversary of the disappearance of Sheila St. Clair.

"Knowing that the BIPOC community experiences domestic violence at significantly higher rates, brings home the fact that we have so much work to do," Robb said.

Her advice for those who want to support survivors includes:

1) Recognize if someone starts drawing inward, beginning to isolate away from those who love them.

2) Be present in their lives, and ready to listen when they're ready to talk.

3) Respect the choices they make about their safety, even if it's not what you'd do.

4) Know the resources available.

Also, to make sure others don't follow in the footsteps, teach your children equity and equality for all humans, Robb added.

Safe Haven is ready to help. They have a 24 hour crisis line: 218-728-6481 If you are in danger, please call 911.
