A new website is currently available for Northlanders to be well aware of their surroundings out on the lake this summer in an effort to enforce safety.

Paddle Safe Twin Ports is a data-based website created by the Minnesota Sea Grant program and Maritime Transport Industry to inform paddlers of basic expectations while engaging in water activities. 

The website has information about weather, paddling conditions, traffic schedules, and creating a float plan.

The Maritime Transport Industry of Duluth says they're seeing more people use paddling devices in Lake Superior's Harbor, putting paddlers in potential danger.

Minnesota Sea Grant Associate Director Jesse Schomberg, said kayaking under the Aerial Lift Bridge or anywhere near the harbor without precautions, puts paddlers in the direct line of ships and testy waters.

"We recognized an opportunity to make sure that the folks that were using the harbor and the lake were doing so in a safe manner and had good resources," said Schomberg.

Jake Boyce, Owner of Day Tripper of Duluth, advises kayakers to know their skill and be aware of their surroundings.

"Know your own limits," said Boyce.

Both advise beginner kayakers to steer away from certain areas of Lake Superior unless under supervision.
