Boreal Community Media, Cook County Higher Education, and North Point Foundation are joining together to bring several youth technology camps to Cook County students this summer.  Three separate youth camps are being offered in July.  All three of the camps will be based out of North Point (the former Grandma Ray's building) in downtown Grand Marais.  Masks and social distancing will be required for all students attending the camps.  To register for these camps, follow this link to Cook County Higher Educations's registration page: https://mycche.org/events/

Camp Dates: July 12-July 16

Camp Location: 19 1st Ave W, Grand Marais, MN 55604

The plan for our class this summer is to explore several different fields in technology. We will start by looking at how a computer works. What makes it a computer, and what is the purpose of all those parts inside the box? Next, we will learn the basic concepts of coding. We will begin by seeing what all computer languages have in common, and then actually create a game in Python.  Next, it is time to look at how the computer functions on a network. How do we connect to other devices all over the world? We will investigate wireless connectivity as well as explore the core functions of the Internet. Finally, it's movie-making time. All movies must start with an idea, be developed through writing scripts, filming, editing, and then presenting. We will do all of that and more.

Instructor:  My name is Mike Wiens and I am very excited to be leading an exploration in technology camp this summer. I have worked with students in all grade levels for the past 27 years and am passionate about technology education. Currently, I am the Director of Technology at Legacy Christian Academy in Andover, MN as well as an adjunct instructor at Hennepin Technical College. I grew up in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area where I attended Bethel College and received my degree in Elementary Education, a Master's from St. Cloud State University in Instructional Technology as well as an Associates degree from Hennepin Tech in Networking Administration. My wife and I have been married for just over 9 years and we have a precocious 4-year-old, who loves books, being in the water, digging in the dirt or just watching Clifford the Big Red Dog.

THESE SUMMER TECHNOLOGY CAMPAIGNS ARE BROUGHT TO YOU IN PART FROM A GENEROUS COMMUNITY GRANT FROM THE OPERATION ROUND UP FUND FROM ARROWHEAD ELECTRIC COOPERATIVE AND TRUE NORTH BROADBAND.
