Starting Monday, drivers will find a long-term road closure on Lower Michigan Street.

It will close from near 15th Avenue West to 23rd Avenue West as part of the Twin Ports Interchange Project.

It will reopen in October, but not as Michigan Street. It will be temporarily used to carry southbound I-35 traffic through fall of 2022.

Second Street from 4th Avenue East to 5th Avenue West will also close to traffic beginning on Monday.

Then on Monday, May 3, Second Street East of 6th Avenue East through 9th Avenue East will close to vehicular traffic.

Duncan Schwensohn, Senior Engineer with the City of Duluth, said in a news release the closures are necessary as Second Street between 4th Avenue East and 9th Avenue East will be undergoing a complete reconstruction to accommodate for updated utilities, storm sewer, and updated heating system.

"We understand that Second Street is a popular option for residents and visitors to use, and appreciate the public's understanding in completing this important project," Schwensohn said in the release.

It is anticipated that Second Street will reopen sometime in October.
