This past year has been anything but a bed of roses. Now that spring is on the horizon, however, many are getting out again with the goal to start their gardens.

On Sunday, Gordy’s Gift and Garden was bustling with people picking out all kinds of things. Owner, Gordy Beier is the green thumb behind it all.

“We've got thousands of items. Vegetables, flowers, shrubs, trees, anything you could think of,” Beier said.

According to Beier, April is a good time to begin planting seeds indoors. He advises people not to leave growing plants outside overnight just yet.

“You want to be sure the last frost is over before you put them out without watching them. You can put them out earlier but you want to get some cover on the on those cold nights,” Beier said.

In a cold climate like Duluth, seeds could suffer, but at Gordy’s, Beier and his team package seeds made specifically for this area.

“We get a lot of plants from Canada, which is compatible with our season down here,” Beier said.

Beier said the sooner people can get to a greenhouse, the better because product is going fast.

“I think this year more than ever, you need to get your product. If you want something particular, you need to get it and do it soon,” Beier said.

The good news is that greenhouses are essential, so they will be there when people do get to them.

“People have to eat and people have to garden, so that's why we were an exception to the rule,” Beier said.

Additional local greenhouses will also be opening their doors soon.

Duluth’s Bending Birches will open May 1st.

Hermantown’s Lilac Hill will open their Main Garden Center on May 4th and their Kenwood Garden Center May 5th.

Dates for other local greenhouses are still being announced.
