Authorities have increased the amount of law enforcement personnel at the Minnesota Capitol after riots earlier this week at the nation's Capitol.

In a letter to state lawmakers, Minnesota Department of Public Safety Commissioner John Harrington said the Minnesota State Patrol had increased staffing at the state Capitol on Wednesday in preparation for protests similar to the one in Washington, D.C.

In light of the riots that took place in D.C., Harrington said troopers will continue to have an increased presence at the state Capitol "for the immediate future." Minnesota Department of Natural Resources conservation officers will also assist with security measures.

Harrington made clear that there are few known active threats to the Capitol so far and the State Patrol will continue based on what is needed for upcoming protests, rallies and events at and near the building.

Inside the Capitol and connected buildings, there will also be an increased amount of security staffing and some adjustments to security processes for additional safety, Harrington said.

He noted that "calls to action by elected leaders can and have had substantial consequences and can change that environment in an instant."

However, "The State Capitol and surrounding complex remains a safe place in which to work and visit," Harrington said in the letter.

The commissioner also noted that DPS is tracking other activity at legislators' homes and offices.
