Hunting may seem like the perfect socially distant activity.  But Minnesota health officials still want hunters to think twice before heading out to the shack this weekend.

"Our reminder to you as hunters is that the same considerations you need to keep in mind in other settings are ones to keep in mind while you're hunting," Minnesota Department of Health Infectious Diseases Director Kris Ehresmann said. "So remember that indoor shacks or shelters have the same concerns we would have for any other indoor space."

Ehresmann said even if hunters will be primarily sitting in a stand, it's about who you're with.

"Keep in mind if you're hunting with people from outside your immediate household, please mask up while indoors and keep a distance of 6 feet at all times, inside and out," she said.

Minnesota added a record-setting 3,844 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Commissioner Jan Malcolm compared it to a natural disaster like a wildfire.

"The wildifre will seek out and find any wood that's available to burn. And we've been surrounded by wildfires in our neighboring states for some weeks now. And while we've been trying to keep the flames from expanding and overtaking Minnesota, right now it feels like we're losing ground," Malcolm said.

Wisconsin also set a record Wednesday, nearly surpassing 6,000 new cases.

Leaders there begged people to stay home in their weekly update. Department of Health Services Secretary Designee Andrea Palm says hospitals are reporting staffing strain.

"We should not be having contact with other human beings that we do not live with. Hard stop," Palm said. "That is where we are. That is the best tool that we have to stop the spread of this disease. And we all need to do it with vigilance."
