Video: Minnesota health officials urge caution ahead of Labor Day Weekend

Health officials say the state of Minnesota is entering Labor Day weekend with a higher number of COVID-19 cases than they had hoped for. For this reason, they are asking the public to double down on COVID-19 precautions.
During a press conference Thursday, Governor Tim Walz and other leaders emphasized the importance of avoiding large crowds, practicing social distancing and wearing masks.
“We must all do our part to slow the spread, protect our communities, and keep our businesses open. I know it is hard, but Minnesotans are resilient people. We must dig deep, stay strong, and hold the virus at bay," Governor Tim Walz said.
“We’re seeing concerning instances of community transmission in our state, often linked to private gatherings like parties or weddings,” Commissioner Jan Malcolm said. “Each of us needs to take responsibility and work hard to keep COVID-19 at bay in our communities.”
Health officials say private gatherings like parties, weddings and funerals have contributed to the spread of COVD-19. So, even if members of the public are visiting with their family or friends, they should still limit the number of people present, practice social distancing and wear masks. Health officials stress that this is to protect everyone.
"During a pandemic, one person's actions and decisions don't just effect themselves. They effect those around them at work, at home and everywhere else they go. We need people to understand that their risk tolerance or confidence in their own ability to shrug off COVID doesn't mean they can't pass it on to others who can get seriously ill or even die," Kris Ehresmann, Director of Infectious Disease said.
