When authorities received word of an injured hiker who needed a medevac lift off Isle Royale, a remote Michigan island archipelago in Lake Superior, the U.S. Coast Guard swung into action.

Monday morning’s rescue trip was handled by a helicopter crew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Traverse City, the military said. 

The Coast Guard’s Sector Command Center was notified of the injured person, and sent the crew of the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter to respond. The island, which is a national park, sits about 60 miles northwest of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula mainland. It can be accessed by boat or seaplane, and is a popular destination for wilderness hiking enthusiasts. 

“Special thanks to the Isle Royale National Park rangers, who stabilized and transported the hiker to an area that was safe for our helicopter to hoist from,” the Coast Guard said in a Facebook post on the rescue.

The injured person was secured into a rescue basket and lifted into the helicopter. The person was taken to a Marquette hospital for treatment.
