Jul 21, 2020 08:33PM
Grand Marais Public Library calls Cook County to join a statewide community read and book discussion of A Good Time for the Truth: Race in Minnesota. In the book, sixteen writers explore what it is like to live as a Native person or person of color in Minnesota. Virtual book discussions are in the works for August and September, but now is the time to start reading. Both downloadable and physical copies of the book are available through the library. Everyone is welcome to participate.
This is the second chapter of One Book | One Minnesota, the statewide community read program prepared by The Library Friends of Saint Paul Public Library, who selected the book in response to the killing of George Floyd. “Reading this book in community,” said The Friends, “offers some Minnesotans the opportunity to see their experiences broadly shared and others a chance to educate themselves— and to discover ways to act on their convictions.”
A Good Time for the Truth (2016) was edited by Sun Yung Shin and published by Minnesota Historical Society Press. Contributors include Heid E. Erdrich, Diane Wilson, Andrea Jenkins, Bao Phi, and David Grant. Writes the editor, “As the first book of its kind in Minnesota, it is one wave in a larger movement toward equality.”
Grand Marais Public Library increases knowledge, inspires creativity, removes barriers, and builds community across Cook County. For more information, or help acquiring a book and attending the discussions, please visit grandmaraislibrary.org or call 218-387-1140.
