Lake Superior is the cleanest, clearest and coldest of the Great Lakes, as well as, the largest lake by surface area in the world!

On Sunday, people celebrated these qualities and more during Celebrate Lake Superior Day.

Deanna Erickson, interim manager of the Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve said people have been participating in Celebrate Lake Superior Day on the third Sunday of July since the 1990’s.

“Lake Superior is the largest source of freshwater that we could possibly have in North America and it’s an incredibly beautiful place to live and it makes our communities very special,” Erickson said.

According to Erickson, Celebrate Lake Superior Day was founded by former Superior City Councilor Bob Brown.

This year’s Celebrate Lake Superior Day included a scavenger hunt that took participants to landmarks along the shore.
