The board of the Superior Hiking Trail Association has decided not to build a bridge over the Split Rock River—citing cost and complexity.
According to the board, the cost of the bridge would have been roughly $2,000 per foot.
Additionally, the site of the bridge would have been more than 2.5 miles from the nearest road, so supplies would have to be flown in by helicopter.
The board said people can still cross the river in places where water levels are low.
