St. Louis County Undersheriff Dave Phillips told the Duluth News Tribune, "Considering the condition of the plane, it's nothing short of a miracle." Phillips told the News Tribune that a man and a woman were found 400 feet north of the crash site and that authorities were not aware of any other passengers on the plane.

Phillips told the News Tribune the call of the reported plane crash came in around 3 p.m. and by 4 p.m. authorities found the scene of the crash about two miles east of the airport. He told the News Tribune that emergency responders started to immediately put out a small fire at the scene near the convergence of Bodas and Clyde roads in Fayal Township.

Koivunen told WDIO News the survivors were taken to Essentia-Virginia Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. They took off from Tower Municipal Airport and were on their way to Iowa. The man is 73 and the woman is 68.

Tower Municipal Airport manager John Burgess told the News Tribune that the PA-32 Saratoga, a small 6-passenger single-engine plane, took off from the airport between 11 a.m. and 12 p.m.

St. Louis County Rescue Squad, St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department, Lakeland Fire Department, Fayal Fire Department, Gilbert Fire Department, Central Lakes Fire Department, Hibbing Ambulance, Eveleth Ambulance, and Virginia Ambulance Service responded.

An investigation is underway by the Eveleth Police Department.
