Duluth Airport leaders are vowing to try again after an application for funding to support direct air service from Duluth to Denver was not selected in this round of grants.

The Duluth Airport Authority and the Duluth International Airport had been seeking the Small Community Air Service Development grant through the U.S. Department of Transportation.  The airport announced Tuesday that they had not been selected.

The airport pointed out that 57 applications were filed nationwide seeking more than $37 million from the program, but only $10 million was available.  Ultimately, only 18 applications were awarded grants.

"While we were not successful in this grant round, the support that we received from our regional partners was not just appreciated, but critical," said Natalie Peterson, Director of Communications and Marketing, in a news release. "The DOT has informed us that another grant cycle will be released this spring. We will be applying for this next SCASD grant round and will again focus on direct service to Denver due to the high demand this route has in our region."

Officials will need continued support for future grants and are urging people to email [email protected] for information on how to submit a written letter of support or make a financial pledge.
